The mastery of literacy skills – reading, writing and speaking & listening – are paramount to success at the secondary level of schooling and are crucial life skills. For this reason, each semester, students must study one English unit.
At Tallangatta Secondary College, we utilize the VMG (Vertical Modular Grouping) to offer a broad range of literacy subjects designed to cater for a variety of student interests and ability levels, whilst meeting the requirements of the Victorian Curriculum.
Students begin their journey at TSC in the Year 7 transition program, and will undertake a compulsory integrated English/Humanities unit. Students then move into the Middle School and undertake Level 1, 2 and 3 units before entering VCE/VCAL.
The VMG allows students to apply for advancement to Level 2 or 3 units, or VCE units.
Intervention and Literacy support:
Through observation and use of student data, teachers differentiate their instruction and modify the tasks they require students to complete to ensure every student is still challenged, but able to achieve success. Some students may be invited at Year 8 to be involved in a targeted program to improve student reading. This occurs again at Year 10.
Our English Curriculum meets the requirements of the Victorian Curriculum and will look like: 2020 English Curriculum Handout
